Vanderford Glacier Ice Radar Survey
The Vanderford Glacier (66° 35' 00.0" S, 110° 26' 00.0" E) is an approximately 9km wide glacier flowing NW into the SE side of Vincennes Bay near the Windmill Islands. It was named by the US-ACAN for Benjamin Vanderford, pilot of the sloop of war Vincennes of the US Exploring Expedition under Charles Wilkes, 1838-42.
An aerial ice radar survey was conducted over the Vanderford Glacier in the summer of 1985/86 by Australian Antarctic Division engineer Evan Davis. The survey used a specialised 400Mhz downward sounding radar system mounted in a Bell 206 Jet Ranger helicopter. A second helicopter (Hughes 500) accompanied the Bell 206 for safety reasons and to deploy JMS doppler satellite surveyor systems on the surface of the glacier to measure ice movement.
