A big drift tail in the lee of the vans after a blizzard - D5 "Monica" and D7 "Jane" are nearly buried. Drifting snow collects quickly in the lee of stationary objects. This is after just a few days of high wind.
A D5 or D7 does not have sufficient engine or hydraulics power to break free from this amount of snow buildup. The only way to free the machines safely was through backbreaking manual work with a snow shovel. Wilkes Land, Autumn 1986.
