T1, Summer Traverse

The Summer Traverse was the first traverse of the year and designated T1.

The traverse party consisted of Glaciologist Bill Hazelton, Navigator Malcolm Parnell, Diesel Mechanics Eman (Papa George) Hedanek and Jim Hall, and Electronics Engineer Lex Harris.

The traverse departed Casey on 5th February 1986 with D5s Monica and Gentle Ben, D7 Jane, 2 living vans with 25kVA genset and 5 additional sleds with 220 drums of aviation turbine kerosene.

We travelled south to A028, approximately 300km south from Casey. At A028 a new Automatic Weather Station was installed to replace an older station that had been almost totally buried by snow accumulation. We arrived back at Casey on 27th February 1986.
