Shirley Island
Shirley Island (66° 16' 55.9" S, 110° 29' 17.9" E) is a rocky island just off Bailey Peninsula in the Windmill Islands off the Budd Coast. It was named by USACAN after chief photographer's mate Q. Shirley, USN, who took part in USN Operation Highjump.
The island lies approximately 1km to the west of Casey Station, within easy walking distance from the station. Although separated from the mainland by a narrow channel of water, the island is usually easily reached on foot over sea ice or ice floes which normally fill the channel.
The large Adelie penguin rookery on the island was a popular recreational destination for Casey expeditioners.
