Tasmania
My association with Tasmania began in 1982 as a result of my first expedition to Antarctica. Although I don't live there now, the awesome beauty of its wilderness regions created a strong and lasting bond which draws me back whenever the demands of daily life permit.
It's a very special place, but tragically one that is being steadily and relentlessly destroyed by the forces of greed and ignorance. The rapid destruction of this unique wilderness is unforgiveable and the perpetrators will, I believe, be judged very harshly by future generations.
"And so man comes to wild lands armed with his machines. He comes to destroy something of whose value he is largely unaware. He comes because it has been the way for centuries past for man to assert his supremacy over the environment, to wrest a living from his harsh surroundings. Rarely has he been preoccupied with the consequences of his actions."
